Second note to SG community
March 15, 2002

Dear International Structural Genomics Organization,

We are pleased to let you know a little about the current and planned activities of ISGO.

The next International Structural Genomics meeting, sponsored by ISGO, will be in Berlin, Oct 10-13, 2002. Udo Heinemann is leading the organization of the meeting and has a superb program well underway. Prior to the meeting, on the morning of Oct. 10, there will be a meeting of ISGO. We'll look forward to seeing you there!

Several of the ISGO task forces have active agendas. The Task Force on Deposition, Archiving, and Curation of the Primary Information. (Helen Berman, chair) is working on development of data dictionary for deposition of all relevant experimental data (cloning, protein production, crystallography, NMR), and development of target tracking web site and structural genomics pipeline for deposition to PDB. The Task Force on Mechanisms for Publication and Recording of Methods and Results (Guy Dodson, chair) is working on negotiating with journals to create a smooth pathway for publishing short structure reports and to identify what should be in short articles. The task force on Intellectual Property (John Norvell and Barbara Skene, chairs) is researching patent issues in structural genomics. Two of the ISGO task forces (Numerical criteria and Target tracking) have completed their mandates and are being retired. Congratulations to all the members of these task forces and to the continuing task forces.

ISGO has been sponsoring workshops for the purpose of international collaboration in structural genomics. These have included the series of workshops on in vitro expression hosted by Shigeyuki Yokoyama, the "Workshop on collaboration in high-throughput X-ray structure determination" hosted by Tom Terwilliger, Paul Adams, and Samar Hasnain and to be held this March, the workshop on NMR methodology hosted by John Markley and Guy Monteliono in June, the workshop on Structural Genomics and Software Integration hosted by Helen Berman in May just before the ACA meeting, the workshop on high-throughput structure determination, hosted by Uwe Mueller, Victor Lamzin, and Tom Terwilliger to be held just before the Berlin meeting this fall, and a workshop on "Cell-free protein production" hosted by S. Yokoyama and P. Umbach, also to be held as a satellite to ICSG 2002, Berlin, 8-9 Oct 2002, at the central laboratory facility of the Protein Structure Factory. If you have a workshop that promotes international collaboration that you would like sponsored by ISGO (just in name for now), please let us know!

Best regards,
